Hollywood Jews: Transformation of the Los Angeles Jewish Community

Louis B. Mayer

Born as Lazar Meir, Louis B Mayer along with his father, mother, and two sisters left the Russian Empire, settling in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1901. At a young age, Louis B. Mayer would join his father in the salvage business in Canada.

At nineteen around 1905, Louis B. Mayer left Saint John for Boston to open his own salvaging business. In Boston, Mayer would meet his future wife.

A decade would pass before Louis B. Mayer would find himself in Los Angeles. Along the way, Mayer would do whatever was necessary to Americanize himself, including choosing the 4th of July as his birth date, helping to erase as much of his past as he could and to connect himself to his new American ideals.

Follow the journey of Louis B. Mayer to Los Angeles, as the future mogul found a path from a salvaging business to establishing a successful and powerful film studio. This is his story...
